Summary

Sir George Baker’s wall plaque, complete with carved skull, takes us back to the 17th century Civil Wars.

While the floor ledgers commemorate Mayors and Aldermen of this strongly Parliamentarian city, Sir George was a Royalist, who served as Recorder in Newcastle. He was knighted for helping defend Newcastle against the Scots (Parliament’s allies) in 1644, but died in Hull in 1667.

His grandson Thomas paid for the plaque in his memory in 1710.
