Silverware and Plate

Pair of salvers/patens

Common name(s): Victorian patens
Catalogue ID: 776
NADFAS ID: n/a

Description

Pair of Victorian silver salvers or patens returned to Hull Minster following the death of a relative.

A pair of highly decorated solid silver salvers, each with three moulded feet. Decorative scroll like motive adorns the upper side, with an identical inscription on each piece.  At the centre an inscription reads

"PRESENTED/to/ The Reverend JH Henderson M.A/by/Members of the Congregation of/HOLY TRINITY CHURCH HULL/25th October 1848"

The pieces would have had jewels encrusting the edges. These have been gouged out by a previous owner, not the donor.

Hallmark notes

The hall mark indicates that the pieces were made in 1847 in Sheffield. The D and Crown indicate this.

Inscription and donor(s)

"PRESENTED/to/ The Reverend JH Henderson M.A/by/Members of the Congregation of/HOLY TRINITY CHURCH HULL/25th October 1848"

Small gaps in the scroll work indicate that small jewels would have studded the edge of each salver when created.

Donor
The Congregation of Holy Trinity Church
