Floor Slab – George, Betty & Susannah Drant
Description
A very worn and pitted stone commemorating the tallow-chandler George Drant and his family, between the Higson and Jackson memorials in the Chancel. It is only legible in places and has lost most of the white fill in the inscription. It is not listed in NADFAS (1986).
George had married Betty Crompton (bap. Dec 1772 at St Mary's Lowgate) in Sutton on 25 November 1798. The marriage register claimed she was a widow, but Crompton is her maiden name. After Betty's death in 1818 at the age of 45, George married dressmaker Susannah Welbury at Sculcoates on 28 September 1822. She died on 12 February 1836, aged 41. She is also buried here, although Betty seems to be buried with her parents in Castle Street burial ground. Some of George and Betty's children who died in infancy, may be commemorated also: John, two Georges, and Elizabeth, but the lower part of the inscription is illegible. The children may be buried in Castle Street.
