Coffin breastplate

Common name(s): The Griswood coffin plate
Catalogue ID: 712

Description

This name plate was attached to Jane Griswood's coffin and was found at Trinity Burial Ground, Castle Street. It is made of wood with brass studs marking out the details of her name, death and age. The rest of the coffin had decayed in the soil. It is an unusual design with the outer studs forming a shield shape. The studs were all individually made, possibly by her son-in-law who was a brazier (brass maker), and placed on her wooden coffin.
