Humber ware

Catalogue ID: 696

Description

This greenish-glazed pottery is known as 'Humber ware', a pottery made in North and East Yorkshire between the late 1200s and the late-1500s. The nearest source to Hull was a pottery at Holme-on-Spalding-Moor. It is distinctive for its rich red fabric, due to the high iron ore content in the clay. It is a coarse ware used for cooking as it is able to cope with high temperatures. It fell out of favour as metal pots became more popular.
