Westerwald stoneware

Catalogue ID: 680

Description

These pottery pieces of Westerwald stoneware were made in the German Rhineland region between c.1590 and 1900. This bluish grey colour clay was commonly glazed with contrasting dark blue glaze.

Our pieces are from different pots found in the market place area of Holy Trinity's graveyard, one showing a medieval looking lion and another with some almost Art Nouveau flowers. All kinds of jugs tankards and steins were made like this. The decoration was molded, incised or sometimes stamped with dies, such as the piece we have stamped 'AR' for Anne Regina (Queen Anne 1702-1714).
