Hand painted ceramic tankard

Common name(s): The whaler's tankard; The berry tankard
Catalogue ID: 672

Description

This ceramic tankard was found at Trinity Burial Ground, Castle Street. The tankard is hand-painted with a decorative border depicting a nautical theme, possibly of whaling vessels, with flamboyant pennants flying. The pennants show the merchant navy ensign. Strawberries are painted on each side of the tankard.

At some time in its history a breakage occurred to the tankard but this was repaired with two iron bands, as often happened with treasured items. The tankard has been pieced together by a conservator.
