Headstone of the family of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Boddy

Memorials

Headstone – Boddy Family

Catalogue ID: 652

Description

Headstone with horizontal full-thickness break across upper third, commemorating the family of Nathaniel Boddy, a victualler at the South End (Battle's Directory, 1791), who by 1803 (Clayton's Directory) had established himself as a gentleman in West Street, where he died. The inscription names Elizabeth, née Fox (1744-94), son William (1777-88) and Nathaniel himself (1739-1813), and also six children who died in infancy. He and Elizabeth had married on 8 December 1771 at Holy Trinity, but William had been baptised at Fish Street Chapel. The other children buried at Holy Trinity include:

  • Mary (1774)
  • Francis (1775)
  • Elizabeth (1777)
  • Sarah/Sally (1779-80)

All were baptised at Fish Street. It is possible that the other two children were stillborn or did not live long enough to be named.

The stone is complete, but not intact, with a horizontal break about a third of the way from the top, with damage to the inscription for William. Otherwise, the inscription is legible. it is possible this is old damage, as Barton did not record the part of the inscription referring to Nathaniel.
