Headstone – Thomas & Mary Ward

Catalogue ID: 651

Description

Large headstone with 2 full-thickness breaks, and inscription worn almost to illegibility. It has a raised border with rounded corners around the inscription, and an urn carved in relief at the top. It commemorated the brewer Thomas Ward (1742-95), of Dagger Lane (according to Battle's 1791 Directory), his widow Mary (1735-1812) and children who died in infancy. The inscription is supplied mainly from John Barton's transcript in Monumental Inscription in Holy Trinity Churchyard (1860).
