Headstone – Hyde Family

Description

Almost intact headstone, with clear inscription, commemorating Thomas Hyde (1740-1802), foreman of the Dockgate men, his widow Elizabeth, née Wilson (1740-1823), their unmarried adult daughter Elizabeth (1783-1825), and 6 unnamed children who died young. These are probably: Ann/Nancy (1769-1770), Thomas (1774-76), Ann/Hannah (1774-75), John (1776), William (1777) and John (1778-81). Elizabeth jnr is described in her death-notice (Hull Advertiser, 6 May 1825, p. 3) as sister of the auctioneer William Wilson Hyde (1780-1855). The Hydes had married in Tadcaster on 17 Feb 1765.
