Surviving piece of Hawksworth family headstone

Memorials

Headstone – Hawksworth Family

Catalogue ID: 643

Description

Upper part of a sandstone headstone commemorating members of the Hawksworth family. Only the part with an inscription for John (1826-39) and Ann (1819-39) survives; according to Barton's transcription (1860), the stone originally also commemorated an infant, Martha (bur. 15 Sept 1832, aged 5 months), and the children's father, John (1795-1846), a mariner, from Cawood. The word 'Sacred' at the top is carved in a decorative Gothic Revival script.

The dates of death only 5 days apart suggest that John and Ann may have had an infectious illness. Their parents, John and Martha (née Hunter) had married at Holy Trinity in June 1818.
