Common name(s): The Holy Bible with commentary
Catalogue ID: 602
NADFAS ID: N/A

Description

A Practical and Explanatory Commentary on The Old Testament and New Testament, by the Reverend Robert Jamison DD minister of St Paul's Glasgow with illustrative engravings on steel. Two book title in one volume. Very plain volume on exterior, no family pages.

Publisher James S Virtue, City Road London. No publication date evident - estimated publication between 1860 - 1880.

Very large volume with 6 mm a wooden board covered in thin black pigskin. Very thick banded leather spine with guilt lettering 'The Holy Bible". Spine binding has some wear and tear to corners. Marbled endpapers in tact. The cover is slightly loose from the text block which is gilt edged. Throughout the text there are very detailed steel engravings by a number of noted and significant artists such as Raphel reproduced for publication by the printers. Each engraving is protected by a tracing sheet but a reverse imprint of the engraving is becoming clear on every sheet. Engravings are not uniformly distributed throughout the book.  There are also maps in the book e.g a map of Egypt and the Sinai peninsula.

There is a water mark damage on the bottom edge of the book, some limited foxing to pages. There are no finger prints, usage marks in the volume, suggesting very limted or very careful use. The bindings are worn at the corners. There are no repairs evident.
