Wall Plaque - Lieut-Col George Herbert & Private Francis Leslie Shaw
Description
Upright rectangular brass plaque attached to a wooden baseboard of the same size by four screws, commemorating a father and son killed in the First World War. Lieutenant-Colonel George Herbert Shaw, a corn merchant in civilian life, was killed aged 50 at the 2nd Battle of Ypres, 24 April 1915 – shot through the head by a sniper. His fourth son, Francis Leslie Shaw, a private in the 48th Canadian Highlanders, was killed on the Somme on 26th September 1916, aged 21. He is commemorated on the Vimy Ridge memorial, near Arras.
Lettering in Roman Caps., inlaid with black, within engraved boarder of straight lines containing running border of oak-leaves, acorns and maple leaves. Fleuree cross with circle within quatrefoil at each corner. 1st. inscription surmounted by badge of E.Yorks. Regiment; the second by Canadian regimental badge: Imperial crown on maple leaf with the word Canada in Roman letters.
